The Lust of the Eyes:
"Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied."
- Proverbs 27:20 KJV
In my daily devotional reading, I came across this very important and powerful verse in the scriptures. At first glance, I thought that the verse had no direct application to the topics of our class, but the more I read the verse the more I am inclined to believe that it does have a practical application to what we are learning.
One of the most important topics we have discussed in the course has been the idea of sacred places and how they are constructed. We also discussed the importance of using the senses in evaluating these places. Moreover, I began pondering on the sense of sight.
Firstly, we have to always be careful to not begin constructing visual expectation for the places. When we do this, we set up ourselves to be let down by the place in almost every opportunity. Yes, sometimes sacred places are beautiful, but for others it is other senses that are tapped into. Secondly, we have to remember that our pride oftentimes likes to get in the way of our connection to God. For some reason, most likely because of sin, man likes to believe that we can or somehow could have made the place better. All of the times, this is false. Lastly, because we are a want and need oriented people, we don't allow for spiritual experiences to happen. In other words, a person would be at fault if they decided that they were going to hike the Appalachian Trail and have their laid-out needs met. This again is simply not so. God will speak to you and give you what He feels that you need.
