Importance of Community and Unity

The more time I spend at university the more necessary I see outside reading. I used to be only really interested in academic-like readings that provoked my mind in a certain way. These types of readings are good. However, I found myself missing out on another part of learning that my mind, heart and soul craved deeply. A close friend of mine several years ago had the opportunity to live in a community of people who loved exploring this part of their lives. Ever since she shared with me her time there I’ve been fond of going to the site where stories are shared from people just like her. I recently came to a post that talked all about creativity and I was inspired to make a blog as I reflect on it. This community believes that opening oneself to be seen, especially in a specific craft, is essential to inspiration and growth. They see something powerful in valuing your work, taking ownership over what you’ve produced and boldly declaring “I am worth being seen.” This is awesome. And contrary to what some may think. This community sees that letting oneself be celebrated makes space in the heart to celebrate others and cancels the need for competition or comparison. It’s cherishing each part of the body for what it is. This is what unity looks like. This allows for the community to gather together and champion one another with consistency. Letting ourselves be known and celebrated is essential to the heart and allowing it come alive. I’ve been inspired by this lesson and hope for in the future to allow for a space where I can be celebrated and where I can celebrate people. This may mean gathering regularly for Open Mic Nights. This may mean celebrating birthdays. It may mean sharing poetry. Each day this means making an effort to gather around the dinner table. In these moments we will be seen, heard and known by others.
