Kelley Calvin Communicating with Nature #2

The Lion's Bridge
As we arrived at the Lion's Bridge, I was slightly overcome by the beautiful scenery that was before me. All my senses were in sensory overload. The soon setting sun was blasting everyone with its rays and reflecting off the River of the James. Multiple people were enjoying this beautiful scene. Nature has weird ways of communicating with people. This simple sunset had an impact on me.

I have seen multiple sunsets in my life, many from various locations in the world. All are beautiful however, not every single one has an impact on me, after all, the sun does set everyday (well, for now). This sunset, over the James River, was different from the rest I have seen in Newport News. The way the sun reflected over the water reminded me of watching the sunset in California with my grandfather. We both had infatuations with the water. He was in the Coast Guard and I kayaked and rowed regularly. The way the sun hits the water while setting it something that will always remind me of my grandfather. I felt that in that moment, while watching the sunset at the Lion's Bridge, that not only nature was communicating to me but my grandfather was communicating with me. For what he was telling me, remains a mystery. Perhaps he was telling me that he loves me, or just reminding me that sunsets were something we did together. No matter what, watching the sunset at the bridge reminded me of how powerful and emotional nature can be.
