The Great Smokys (Hiking)
Hiking is a topic we commonly touch on in class, so I am deciding to write about my experiences with it relating to current events. My family and I all love to hike. We go on hiking trips yearly. This past year we hiked all around Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. We commonly go to the Shenandoah for day trips and we have also visited Tennessee, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania to hike. For the sake of this entry, I will be focusing on the Tennessee hiking trip my family and I took a couple years back.
Probably after five years ago, My parents told me and my two siblings that we would be going to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee for a week long hiking adventure in the Smoky Mountains. The trails we ventured on to were full of wildlife and spectacular views. We hiked to waterfalls, through caves, and across bridges made out of fallen trees. We experienced the area in other ways as well, like taking a train ride up into the mountains, white water rafting, mini golfing, and going to local restaurants. Even though we technically stayed in Pigeon Forge, we spent most of our time in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Gatlinburg is the main reason for my writing on this topic.
At the time that I am writing this, the Great Smoky Mountains are being burned down due to wildfires. Even though officials believe the fire started from natural causes, it is devastating to see the drastic damage the fires have done. The place I used to know as luscious and continually green are now burning with a fiery passion and only leaving ashes behind.
