The four axioms are highly written about in this book, and was an important part of our midterm this semester. The four axioms include:
- The sacred place is not chosen, it chooses
- Sacred place is ordinary place made extraordinary
- Sacred place can be tred upon without being entered
- The impulse of sacred place is both centripetal and centrifugal, local and universal
I connect personally with the fact that the sacred place is not chosen, it chooses us. In a past blog post, I said that the Nolan Trail was a place I found a spiritual connection with. I did not go to the Nolan Trail last year to find a spiritual connection, I went for the exercise and for my dog's health, but I truly feel God now every time I walk the trail. It is not a long hike, but it still brings me closer to nature.
A sacred place that is ordinary is made extraordinary, just like my connection with the Nolan Trail (Same example I know, I just don't get out a lot). The Nolan Trail was meant to be an ordinary place, but became extraordinary after feeling the spiritual connection.
I have not yet experienced a sacred place that I have tred upon without being entered, but I hope to in the future. For now, I suppose I can relate this to having mental sacred journeys that are not linked up to a certain location.
Lastly, a sacred place can be both local and universal. My local sacred place is the Nolan Trail, and I have yet to leave the country yet, but maybe one day I will go on the Camino and that will end up being another sacred place for me.
