The symbol of the spider (Landscapes)
Many people have used the spider as different kinds of symbols.  Some people see the spider as a pest,  some admire but also loath the spider.  Some admire the spider for crafting a very beautiful intricate web but hate the spider's weak moral goal of waiting for weak insects to hit the web in order to survive.  In myths, the spider is very wise, sensitive and skillful.  Jonathan Edward's uses the spider as a metaphor in American spirituality by saying that people are like a spider being held in the hand of God over a fire.  The people are uncertain if they are pleasing God, and if God isn't please, he would easily throw the spider into the fire.  Jonathan Edwards uses the symbol of the spider in that metaphor and another example that would bring delight to the reader's imagination.  These examples can cause the reader to think about the life and the afterlife.  Also Edwards analyzes how many religions use symbols to energize followers, for example David's star, the cross, etc.
