Ashley Irving: Landscapes of the Sacred #2

Mythic Landscapes

I have not climbed a mountain as vast and majestic as Mount Rainer, nor do I believe that I ever could do so. I do however wish to have an experience similar to those who do climb such majestic natural beings such as Mount Rainer. To experience something so strong and deep within you that you feel that you have "'entered' the place and it was reluctant to let [you] go" is such a fantastic sacred communication.

Mountains are very powerful aspects of nature and they project their power onto those who witness it. Standing at the base of a mountain or at the foot of a trail that circumnavigates the mountain allows one to truly recognize just how large and powerful the mountain is. In this moment I imagine that all of one's problems seem small and insignificant in comparison to the size of the mountain.

The mountain is described as being the "mask of the holy" in that you see a character outwardly as you look upon the mountain but within is an entirely different character as when you look upon someone wearing a mask and you are able to see what the mask is showing you but not what is beneath it. I believe that while the mountain acts as a mask of the holy, it also forces one to remove their own mask.

When faced with the daunting mountain, one must remove their own mask to not only look within themselves for determination and perseverance, but also to look at themselves and truly evaluate who they are, not who they perceive themselves as or how them present themselves outwardly to others. when in the presence of the mountain, ones inner character is able to make an appearance and become one with the outward one as the mask of the self is removed and the two selves merge to become a single character. To be able to experience this sort of self-reflection would be life-changing.
